Glisk
“a gleam of sunlight through a cloud; a glow of heat from a fire. Figuratively, a glimpse of the good (Shetlandic)”
Glisk are a contemporary string quartet based in Glasgow, made up of violinists Helena Zambrano Quispe and Kirsty Orton, violist Shelagh McKail, and cellist Jessica Kerr. With a focus on exploring new repertoire together, Glisk have thoroughly enjoyed working with the seven composers, and immersing themselves in the musical interpretation of these tree stories. You can see and hear more about Glisk on instagram @gliskquartet or by coming to see us performing live as part of this project. If you are interested in booking Glisk to perform the Stories of People and Trees suite live at your venue, please get in touch using the contact form.
Seven composers were commissioned to write new music, for Glisk, in response to one of the tree stories. After immersing themselves in the story collection, each composer chose a story that inspired them and development work began. Some composers met in person with the story contributors, others visited tree sites, researched ecological details, explored music from the homeland of the tree or story contributor, and in collaboration with Jessica and with Glisk, a diverse and communicative suite of music was created. The suite of new music was premiered in June 2023 at the Hidden Gardens, Glasgow, and is now available to listen to on the Music page. Tree sites around Scotland are hosting QR codes to allow visitors to connect to these recordings and listen to the music whilst in the company of trees and nature.
The composers writing for Stories of People and Trees are: Lisa Robertson - inspired by A Requiem or Celebration for Ash; James Ross - inspired by The Apricot Tree; Emily Scott - inspired by A Winter Solstice; Rylan Gleave - inspired by The Scots Pine, as seen by the tree photographer; Paul Towndrow - inspired by The Fossil Grove; Thomas Djønne - inspired by The Climbing Tree; Gráinne Brady - inspired by The Family Lilac.
